Component of the mitochondrial outer membrane sorting assembly machinery (SAM or TOB) complex, which is required for the sorting of proteins with complicated topology, such as beta-barrel proteins, to the mitochondrial outer membrane after import by the TOM complex.

1. budding yeast mitochondrial outer membrane proteins that are subunits of the translocase of the outer mitochondrial membrane (Tom70 and Tom 22) and sorting and assembly machinery (Sam37) are required for efficient pretransfer RNA splicing. PMID: 30228203
2. We propose that ab'-NAC and Sam37 are members of the system that recognizes mitochondrial proteins at early stages of their synthesis, escorting them to the import machinery of mitochondria. PMID: 28109174
